IF Statement referencing a cell that already has formula

I am writing a simple IF statement. IF(A1='Outstanding', 1, 0). However Cell A1 already has a formula so the IF statement is not working. This is because IF statement is not finding 'Outstanding' there but only the formula in Cell A1. Please help!
