what does "try" and "except" do in python

I am learning how to code python on codecademy and I get a lesson about control flow talking about "try" and "except" and "raising an error" (I have no clue what it means to raise an error). So I would like some help understanding how they are used, what they mean, and an example of how someone would use these.
