What's considered better code: multiple conditions or declaring variables?

I have an option is either to make condition for each variable I have and if not empty then assign to some variable or what I thought was more pretty but I am afraid is not a good practice is assigning all variables that I want to check whether they are null or not into an array and then loop over the array and the first one which is not null then I assign to the variable and break the loop.
