how to make an element unaffected by anything else

So I'm working on a header, and my header has a centered piece of text. When I go to add a button it moves my centered text over like 50px or so and it needs to be centered or it will look crap.

Is there a css element that will make this piece of text unaffected by my buttons? PS: z-index: -1; was not working
