Microsoft Word (2016): Change Background Color via if else and placeholders

is it possible to change the background color of an tablefield via if else in Word? I am using placeholders like << date >> (date = "25.05." f.e.) and I want to check whether it is emtpy or not and change the bgcolor if needed..

Somehing like this: If << date >> is emtpy do nothing else change backgroundcolor to yellow
