How to use conditional if statements in Mako template engine, used in Odoo?

I can not find any informations on simple use of an comparison between to variables in Mako:

% if var1 > var2:
var1 is bigger
% endif

this one throws an error in Odoo, and the email template is not generated. Anyone know what is wrong?
