Can you help me with this homework in java

Write code so that the user prints characters (via a scanner) which characters are saved to a char type variable (NO ARRAY YES VARIABEL ONLY). The user gives characters until they type in the '.' Character (dot) where after this character is finally displayed a total of typed characters (without counting the dot).
