stored function setting variable as a query

I've got an upcoming project that requires use of stored functions containing IF statements. I'll have to use the SELECT statement to create some queries which form part of the IF statement, but the queries are long and will be repeated. Does anyone have example code of temporarily storing a MYSQL query to a local variable, within a stored function?
