If $1 could be multiple arguments, do I write a separate 'if' for each one? [closed]

I tried a couple differently worded searches and gave up. An example might be better. If one user entered 'this.sh help' and another entered 'this.sh ?' could both arguments be tested for in one 'if' or does there have to be two 'if' tests, one for each different $1? In bash on LMDE.
