How to replace numbers with N/A in R

I am trying to replace numbers with N/A in R.

Why does this work - primaryage<-na_if(PrimaryAge, 0) - but the two below do not?

primaryage<-na_if(PrimaryAge, 96) primaryage<-na_if(PrimaryAge, 97)
